Wethersfield Diner

Super breakfast at Wethersfield Diner one of the friendliest places to go for a good mea. Had the Irish Benedict with the super smashed potatoes on the grill. Forgot that corned beef hash had potatoes also and had my carb fill for  the day. Perfect eggs and delicious hollandaise sauce.

THE WETHERSFIELD DINER

Saint Patrick's Day was a glorious sunny day and it needed to be celebrated with a good lunch. This was definitely achieved at the Wethersfield Diner. A party of six with four ordering the Corned Beef dinner [$12.99] which certainly looked delicious with several slabs of lean glistening corned beef. But never one to follow the crowd I ordered Bratwurst and Colcannon with mashed potatoes with bacon and brown gravy [$10.99]. This was a luscious plate of Irish delight!

9/2/15

Lunch today at The Wethersfield Diner. I have been driving by here for a few weeks to get some dinner but it has always been closed; it's only open for breakfast and lunch [until 3pm]. It has a good selection of traditional diner food but.........the Polish food!

The Polish Platter [$11.95] was a lunch special consisting of grilled kielbasa, two cheese pierogis, rye bread and kapusta [sauerkraut sautéed with bacon and onion]. The kelly dog was delicious and the kapusta was awesome. This was some of the best Polish I have had [including Warsaw and Krakow].

blognote: the waitstaff and the cooks are hopefully not fighting in the kitchen so maybe the noise was everyone having fun

Frittata redux...

So where should we go for lunch after the morning meeting and before the afternoon meeting? We went to O'Rourke's Diner where I hadn't been for ages. Sounded like a good idea, found a parking spot and there was a booth available. As usual the the menu had so many good items on it. Wanted the corned beef hash in some form or other but the special of the day sounded great. And it looked great too.

This is the Peach and Brie Frittata with Sausage Homefries [$16]. It was beautiful and bland where even a shake of salt and pepper didn't help. Labeled as a frittata but with the consistency of a quiche and 'I should have asked the price before I ordered it' syndrome kicked in.

And this is what it looked like the following morning after I sliced it and sautéed it in basil infused olive oil and butter. Not so pretty but oh so tasty!

Olympic Coffee Shop

Stopped for lunch at the Olympic Coffee Shop before attending a play at the Fringe Festival. Had a lackluster Monte Cristo Sandwich which consisted which was really a grilled chicken/ham sandwich with a layer of melted cheese on top. An extra pat of butter and a squeeze bottle of pancake syrup were served also. Filled me up and gave me a respite from the crowds on Delancey Street. So I guess it was a successful stop.

New Britain Diner

Another birthday lunch here at the New Britain Diner at 1130 Corbin Avenue. Real close to the NBMAA and that's where we were for the Provincetown Exhibit. I had the Greek Burger with feta cheese, lettuce and tomato on a nice sesame roll. Opted for coleslaw instead of fries to make believe I am on a diet. I had a choice of salad or soup and chose the delicious Chicken Orzo [with pasta and no orzo] filled with tender chicken and lots of veggies [$8.95].

My hostess had the Crabmeat 'stuffed' Sole with a [not so] green salad, sweet potato and corn. Lots of food for a good price [$8.95].

blognote: We skipped dessert but I came home with a homemade piece of pear pie for supper.

Moonlite Diner

Shopping day, shopping day! Not me but family I was staying with. So we stopped to eat something; what's new about that! Between hither and yon in Hollywood we stopped into the next available eatery and it was the Moonlite Diner.
Typical good diner food: Tuna Melt on rye with sweet potato fries for $9.99. The other two orders were a Santa Fe salad and a Ham and Swiss Panini with coleslaw.

Hometown Grille [CT]

Just as its name implies, this is a hometown eatery where you can get some good food. Regulars drop in and are waited on and cooked for by some very nice people. No big box franchise here.

I ordered a whiteboard special: Spinach Mushroom Omelette [$4.95]. This came with home fries and toast. Nothing better than rye toast with butter and unlimited fresh ground Omar coffee [$1.55]. For some reason this was the highlight of my breakfast. The omelette would have been much better is the cook had used some seasoning on the spinach and/or the mushrooms. The home fries also needed something. This would have been great for someone on a salt-free diet.

blognote: Next time I will order eggs and toast; these looked great as they were served

Esquire Diner [NY]

Had lunch/dinner at the Esquire Diner on the way to Comfort Inn to drop off passengers on way back to Beijing. They needed to stay overnight in the JFK area.

Our entrées were: Cheeseburg [5.95], Reuben with fries [$11.50], Hot Brisket Melt [$11.25] and my Mulberry Street [$11.50] grilled sweet Italian sausage, peppers and mushrooms on a grilled garlic roll.
The sandwiches were all excellent. All served with terrific coleslaw [see blognote] and a full sour pickle.

blognote: My coleslaw had a hunk metal in it, looked like a dentist's separator. The coleslaw and pickle were quickly replaced with macaroni salad. After I gifted it to the waitress they kept looking at me like I had planted it. No damage however and no mention at checkout either.
