PEI Food

The food highlights of my Prince Edward Island trip were:

Mussels, mussels and more PEI mussels!

Stanley Bridge Resort: blueberry salad dressing, sweet savory in the turkey stuffing, seafood chowder, Acadian baked beans, fruit stuffed rolled roast of pork

Atlantic Superstore in Summerside: potted chicken and beef sandwiches on great bread, mussels

Long River Women's Institute at Springbrook Hall: wild blueberry cheesecake, pickled this and that and piccalilli

The Home Place: Malpeque oysters, blueberry cake with lemon sauce and cream

Chez Yvonne: toasted homemade wheat bread

Maplethorpe Inn: Organic Lunch of mushroom soup, spinach salad with raspberries, tarragon chicken breast, bread pudding

Dalvay by the Sea in the National Park: sticky date pudding

New Glasgow Lobster Suppers: mussels and the rolls

and the HIGH highlight: a 'private' oyster tasting outside the L&C Fisheries with a local oysterman wanting an 'away' opinion. This was while the rest of the group was listening to a talk.

O'Porto Restaurant

Another Taste of Hartford; how can you not love this event. Look at this year's website and see which restaurants are participating this year [and all the great menus].
Three of us again, so three great meals. They started with a pitcher of white Sangria and I had a glass of Vinho Verde.

Appetizers: two orders of Crepes Recheados: Crepes Stuffed with Shrimp, and Crab in a Tomato Broth and my Camarão Grelhado - Grilled Shrimp in a Lemon Garlic Butter Sauce with a Crouton
Entrées: one Linguado Grelhado - Grilled Fillet of Sole over Spinach and Mashed Potatoes in a Lemon-Butter Wine Sauce and we split a Paella à Casa - Shrimp, Clams, Mussels, Pork, Chicken, Chouriço, Combined with Saffron Rice
Desserts: two Chocolate Mousse and for me the Flan O'Porto - Traditional Portuguese Flan Flavored with a 10-Year Fonseca Tawny Port Wine

bloginfo: This year's price was $20.08 and a bargain at that.
blognote: We always get the same table!

October 12, 2007
Another birthday celebration!
This time it was a dual party: me and brother-in-law.
Had a great dinner at O'Porto on Park Street in Hartford. Have eaten there many times and it is always good. We had a $20 discount card [Hartford Symphony/CT Opera] but couldn't use it as we ordered from the Park on Park Special $20.07 menu.

There were three different appetizers and we each had one: Camarão Alhinho [sautéed Brazilian shrimp in a garlic butter sauce], Sopa de Vegetals [carrot and pumpkin purée with collard greens] and House Salad [me, on a diet!].

We then had the Paelha for three. It was overflowing with clams, mussesls, chicken and linguiça. Ample flavoring of saffron and the seafood gave it a sweet taste with the smoked sausage highlighting it all. Very successful.

They shared two half pitchers of White Sangría [long story] and I had a glass of Vino Verde.

Two Flanes and a Arroz con Dulce for dessert followed by three Capuccinos.

blognote: we had reservations and the place was mobbed; no tables without reservations tonight

Whole Foods

Sundays at Whole Foods; now there is a new venture!

They have a brunch station and omelets to order [$7.95] but we all chose the pizza station. Three entrées of a Breakfast Foccacia which was stuffed with scrambled egg, cheddar cheese and thick bacon. Heated in the pizza oven, it was great. That and a bottle of Ginger/Lemon tea set me back less than $5. What a bargain. This could easily the Panera Sunday stop.

8/1/2008
The other night [after those great wings at Big Bubba's BBQ] we ate a light supper at Whole Foods in Glastonbury.

I opted for the Double Salmon Sushi Roll which was an inside out roll filled with chopped salmon and wrapped with salmon and avocado. This was accompanied by my most favorite refreshing summer drink of a Tea Sparkler. There are two varieties and I can never remember the names. Anyway this is the one with the honey. For dessert I ordered a kiddy cup of Mango/Melon Sorbet. It all came to $16.41 including tax [and, of course, no tip as it was take away].

bloginfo: The hot food sections of Latino and Comfort Foods were not open at this time [6:30? pm]
blognote: The other sushi orders were Spicy Tuna and Salmon [cooked] with brown rice.
