Dakota

Ate at Dakota for lunch with the MSG crowd [genealogists from the gym; long story…].

A delicious meal of Prime Rib Sandwich with Garlic Mashed Potatoes [$10.50] and a glass of Beauzeau [BOZO ($7.95)] and coffee [$1.50]. The au jus for the Prime Rib was a waste but the horseradish sauce was good.

I skipped dessert [see my blog on desserts at www.turning70.blogspot.com]

Wood-n-Tap

Had lunch at Wood-n-Tap in their new location in Rocky Hill on the Silas Deane Highway [in the former Ground Round]

Great lunch, new decor, good service.

Had a Smithwick's beer on tap. Entrée was the Marinas Sandwich - a grilled piece of salmon with lettuce, tomato, pickles on a sesame seed bun with dill mayonaisse. Delicious.

For dessert we split a Madagascar Fudge Nut Brownie with vanilla ice cream. Also, delicious. Good coffee!

blognote: will definitely return
we ate in a booth in the bar
lots of people out for lunch; don't they work?

Piolin

After the Hartford Stage production of 'Fences' [great], we ate at Piolín [Tweety Bird?].

This is a Peruvian restaurant and it seemed that we were the only non-Peruvians there [good sign].

They put garlic bread, toasted corn and a dip [foamy green innocent-looking but with a bite] on the table.

Three entrées: Fried Fish with Vegetables, Fried Fish in Garlic Sauce and Beef Stew. The vegetables on the first entrée were sauteed onions and peppers, the garlic sauce was a mild brown sauce chock-full of sliced garlic and the beef in the stew was two good sized pieces of pot roast over white beans and an onion salsa. The white rice was good and plentiful.

Three desserts: flan, buding [rice pudding] and zapote ice cream. Googled 'zapote' and got not much info on this tropical fruit which makes an orange icecream with a distinctive flavor. Try it!

blognote: the servings are large and inexpensive
bloginfo: Piolín is open from 11am every day and is located at 417 New Britain Avenue in Hartford, CT

Cromwell Kitchen

The sign outside says: The Best Lunch in Town.

A big boast but they do have something there. Cromwell Kitchen is right next door to Mortensen's Ice Cream [closed for the season]. The new owners, the Piankas, are trying very hard to impress and with ties to Mario Batali, they are succeeding.

For lunch we each tried a Panini: his was a BLT [$6.50] consisting of bacon, roasted red onion, pickled green tomatoes and peppered mayo on Filone bread. Mine was the Capicollo [$7.15] with roasted marinated eggplant and mustard greens. Both paninis were excellent and plated beautifully.

He tried an order of fries and I had the sweet potato fries. The orders are huge but expensive [$3.50]. Well worth it but try splitting an order 2 [or 3 ways].

They have an excellent selection of soft drinks: imported and local [even Avery's from New Britain]. The cold item displays were very impressive with fresh pasta, entrées, side dishes and even desserts. The desserts up front looked great too.

The Cromwell Kitchen has paninis; rye, sourdough and ciabatta bread sandwiches, salads and soups.

blognotes: only three tables but the four-top was a beautifully set dining room table with real chairs; lots of foot traffic with orders-to-go. Either way it's good food
