a salad after church...
Went to Panera www.Panera.com in Glastonbury, CT with JD and BD after church [Central Baptist]. They each had a soup: Black Bean and Mushroom Bisque.
Since this was to be my 'meal of the day' I ordered the Bistro Steak Salad. Several slices of medium rare steak over a good field greens salad with gorgonzola and walnuts. Added an iced Green Tea mixture to round out the meal. We all skipped dessert but it was a challenge.
The winner was the combination of the walnuts with the gorgonzola, good dressing too.

3 pierogis +
Had a great time tonight at Tatry's, 735 Wethersfield Avenue, Hartford, CT. I was taken to dinner by BB and JB [dear departed Jean's baby sister].
We ordered just about everything on the menu. I had the Polish Platter which consisted of two Potato Pancakes, Bigos [Hunters' Stew], Kielbasa and three Pierogis [one sauerkraut, one cheese and potato, and one meat]. This with a Zywiec beer was a lot of food but I managed as always. There were also Galompki and Cheese Blintzes and Potatoes.
The winner was the Sauerkraut Pierogi [and the Cheese Blintzes standing in for dessert].

and a parking lot too.......
After Hartford Stage's Othello, NO and MR and I went to Roxie's Gulf Coast Kitchen. Nice new place right near Mozzicato's Bakery on Franklin Avenue. They even have a small parking lot which on Franklin Avenue is a blessing.
NO had the Blackened Bleu Top Sirloin, MR had the Blackened Shrimp Penne Pasta in a spicy Alfredo Sauce with Andouille. Mofongoman had the Voodoo Pork Chop topped with Tropical Salsa, Cheddar Mashed Potatoes and I substituted the Coleslaw for the Veggies of the Day.
We each added the Roxie's House Salad with homemade Buttermilk Ranch dressing.
The winners were the fresh Pecan Muffins in the bread basket, the Coleslaw and the Buttermilk Ranch dressing on the salad.

Pass the [sea] salt!
The MSG [of NEAC] meeting was held today over luncheon at Saybrook Fish House in Wethersfield. Good place for a meeting and good place to eat. We did, of course, more eating than meeting but that's the nature of the beast.
They have changed the salt! No more sea salt unless you ask for it as it does not fit into the new salt shakers. Genealogists do not deal with change very well!
JC2 had the Fried Whole Belly Clams with French Fries while JC1 had the Broiled Sole with Veggies. BW had the Lobster Salad Sandwich with Fries and LMac had the special [as always] of Sole stuffed with Artichokes, Spinach and the kitchen sink over Garlic Mashed Potatoes. BMac and I had a salad with a scoop of Lobster Salad on top [hers was the Caesar Salad and mine the Spinach Salad]. For dessert there was Apple Pie [not like Granny used to make], Pecan Pie and Key Lime Pie.
The winner: the conversation! [all of the meals were good but none excelled the others]

Three Reuben Sandwiches, please........
After today's Y's Men meeting at the Meriden Y, we ate lunch at Huxley's Bookmark Cafe, 1333 East Main Street in Meriden.
We all [Mofongoman, BN and DD] had Reubens [two corned beef and one pastrami]. They were the usual Corned Beef or Pastrami, Rye Bread, Swiss Cheese, Sauerkraut and Thousand Island Dressing all toasty and squishy and non-dietetic. Hey, where's my pickle - they got pickles and I didn't. The waitress solved that by bringing me a plate full of pickles. What a day!
The winner: the crusty, grilled Rye Bread

10, 15 or 20 meatballs?
www.ikea.com
Try this link and find out your closest Ikea showroom; ours is in New Haven, CT.
Convinced BD* and JD to drive me there in their van so I could buy some new dining room chairs [wasn't difficult to convince when they heard about the meatballs!].
The 10 meatball dinner includes gravy, boiled potatoes and lingonberries for $3.99. Each additional 5 meatballs set you back a dollar. We also shared a plate of smoked salmon with mustard dill sauce for our appetizer. Also tried the lingonberry juice. All this came to under $21.
We stopped back after shopping [yes, I got the chairs] and had dessert. Three slices of Swedish Apple Cake with a Vanilla Cream Sauce and three coffees came to $6.00. They even offer a 99 cent breakfast before the store opens.
The winner was the price of meals [and the meatballs and gravy].
*note: Individuals will be double initialized from now on as this blog has taken flight!

Schultze Gets the Blues at Scoozi's
Went to the York Street Cinema with M and saw 'Schultze Gets the Blues' and it was a great movie. Won't win an Oscar but just delightful.
After the movie we scouted out all the restaurants around Chapel Street in New Haven near the Yale campus. We settled on Scoozi's Wine Bar and Trattoria on 1104 Chapel Street. Many people were sitting outside as the weather was quite nice but we opted for a table inside.
We each had a Birra Peroni and split the Arugula Salad [which they plated for two] consisting of Arugula, Gorgonzola, Slivered Almonds, Pear slices and rounds cut from a Fig Roll. The salad had a light dressing and was delicious. For entrees we each ordered the Bistecca over Broccoli Rabe, Garlic, Mushrooms and Sweet Potato Gnocchi.
Both of us were filled up and skipped dessert but had a Capuccino each.
The winner was the Arugula Salad.

hold the fries
Went to Shady Glen in Manchester today and had a CHEESEBURGER and what would anyone else have there for lunch. The Cheesefurter did look good, though.
I had the Cheeseburger Platter with the best Coleslaw in the world; no fries but lettuce and tomato. There were four slices of tomato and two huge pieces of Romaine lettuce. A glass of water with lemon and no ice cream for dessert. I was considering the Pistachio ice cream small Hot Fudge Sundae but after the cheeseburger, no way!
The winners were: the condiment tray [chopped onions, mustard, relish and mustard] and the CHEESE - the glorious fried cheese!

gang of four
After the Y'SMEN and CyberSeniors meeting at the Meriden Y, we went to Fischer's Deli on 27 Colony Street. A family run place great for lunch [and now offering 'Thursday Night's at Fischer's' which I will have to blog at a later date].
I had the Chicken Caesar Wrap which consisted of a chicken [deep fried breaded strips] caesar salad with great dressing in an herb tortilla.
The winner: the group of four guys I ate with: B, my next-door neighbor who introduced me to these new social clubs, and two new friends who have not yet been labeled with initials. The wrap was pretty good, too.
