Marlborough Tavern [CT]

Four of us stopped in for a quick supper after granddaughter's basketball game.

Three Tavern Burgers [$8.99] which were good, two New England Clam Chowders [$4.99] and a Reuben [$8.99]. The burgers were all cooked as ordered with a variety of toppings and accompaniments [bacon, coleslaw, baked potato]. The chowders were deemed good and the Reuben was definitely not from the City. A quick meal in front of the fireplace on a very cold evening.

Forbidden City [CT]

A little too early for Chinese New Years but a great dinner anyway. One of my very favorite restaurants.

Started with a bottle of René Murré Pinot Blanc [$35] which was crisp and fruity and went well with our seafood inspired meal.

Appetizer of Crispy Baby Calamari with Hunan Chili Aioli [$11]

Crispy Sea Scallops with Sichuan hot Mala sauce [$19] and two of Melaka Prawns in a spicy sauce with grilled vegetables [$20]. The prawns were delicious and the sauce was spicy as described. The white rice helped smooth out the dish.

Desserts were Pandan Brulée and my Passion Fruit Pineapple Sorbet [$6 each].

blognote: parking is very difficult on weekend evenings; security now deterring parking in the Metro Theater lot

Peppercorns Grill [CT]

Taste of Hartford 2011

Nice dinner here tonight in a very crowded city restaurant.

Snow parking ban so we used Valet Parking which was overwhelmed by the crowd. The restaurant was so full I thought we would have to wait at the bar. But they seated up promptly at a very nice table. Alejandro, from Buenos Aires, was our server and he is excellent. No rush, good service, great personality; we will be back for the regular menu and to have him be our server again.

Now to the food. The Taste of Hartford menus don't usually excite me but this one had quite a few items to choose from. We both started with a glass of wine: Estancia Chardonnay [$7] and my Fumé Blanc Ferrari [$8.50]. Same appetizer for both: Prosciutto “Sushi Style ~ slices of imported prosciutto di Parma rolled with gorgonzola, black mission figs, and a drizzling of fig and balsamic essence [this looked like three tiny pieces so sushi but was so rich there could be no more on the dish].

Her entrée was the Ossobuco di Maiale ~ slow cooked Korubota pork ossobuco till fork tender with soffritto vegetables and gremolata in a white balsamic scented white wine natural reduction served with butternut polenta and sauteed garden vegetables [great taste, fell of the bone and the butternut polenta was a dream]. My entrée was the Ravioli all ‘Arancia ~ housemade ravioli filled with ricotta, spinach, and orange rind in a sauce of fresh orange, sage, butter, and parmigiano reggiano [creamy and dreamy]. For dessert there was the exquisitely plated Tiramisu [pictured above] and my Passionfruit Sorbetto. A cup of coffee and my cappuccino ended this delicious meal.

Pho Boston [CT]

Lunch here today at Pho Boston with a dear friend [she paid but that's not why she's dear!].

Both had Pho as that is what this place is famous for and rightly so. Big bowls of Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup with scallions, onions and cilantro plus bean sprouts, basil, lime and chili to add in at your taste.

She had #26 Beef Ball Pho [$6.95] and I had #17 Pho Boston Special, a spicy bowl with rare steak, peanuts, tomato and cucumbers. Wasn't too spicy even for me even! And I ate the whole thing slurping up the remains. Yum.

blognote: place was mobbed at lunch time but found a table quickly

Puket Café [CT]

Lunch here again. Nearby, good food, great prices and nice people.

One small bowl of Tom Yum soup with shrimp [$6], my small Tom Kha soup with chicken [$4] and two apps: Calamari [can't find on the online menu] and Crab Rangoon Shumai [$6]. The first soup was spicy and mine was sweet; the calamai was nice and fresh, the shumai very tasty [both had the same dipping sauce].

The Ming Palace Restaurant from Newington on the Berlin Turnpike, rumor says, is coming to Cromwell. They will be situated in the old Diamond Trio location near the entrance to Cromwell Hills. Lots of construction going on there at the moment.
