THE CAFE @Middlebury Consignment

A nice cool lunch on a very hot day in Middlebury Consignment at  THE CAFE. Very sandwichy/salady type of place. The special of the day was a Smoked Salmon Quiche [$9.50] which came with a small salad. I had the Chicken Salad on a Croissant [$10.25] and was quite filled up with chickeny goodness and grapes and other crunchy stuff. That and an Iced Tea made for an enjoyable lunch. Shopping before and after cost nothing as we didn't buy a thing. Rather more expensive stuff but  some very unique gift-type items. The furniture and furnishing were very interesting but everything much too large to fit into this little cottage. Thank goodness!

'rememberable tastes'

Feta Pesto from Beaver Brook Farm graced the middle of this morning's omelette. What a fantastic find! Regular basil pesto was also available but this is so creative, useful, smooth and delicious.

IKEA Café

Took my annual pilgrimage to IKEA today. Of course the first stop was the the Café for the special Swedish Meatball lunch [$5.99]. This consisted of 15 meatballs, mashed potatoes, gravy, lingonberry jam, salad and lingonberry juice. Stopped in after shopping for cake and coffee.

RIPE [CT]

UPDATE:
Just found out that Willow Brook Spirits carries RIPE Cocktail Mixers. This is my favorite liquor store [Cromwell] and I will now get to try all the other flavors.

June 15, 2011

Tried this new cocktail mixer at Whole Foods in Glastonbury today. It was the Agave Mojito from the current line-up of RIPE 100% Natural Small Batch Cold Cocktail Mixers. It was delicious and I could even imagine being back in Havana [without the rum, however]. Try it from the chill in the produce section.

Fresh Pickings' [CT]

The search for the best chicken wings in the area is over. Eureka, they are found at Fresh Pickings' in Wethersfield. This little deli, produce stand, specialty foods market is located in the Goff Brook Plaza next to Ginza [which  I will visit soon!].

The wings [2/$1] are tasty, meaty and spiced just right. I had them for dinner and they didn't last long!

They also sell Calvo Tuna in Olive Oil which is by far the best canned tuna in the world [well, maybe the country or maybe the state or whatever]. It comes in a package of three 80 gram cans for $4.69.

bloginfo: 1307 Silas Deane Highway, 860.257.8162 and open Monday through Saturday from 8 to 6.

David Glass Factory

Visited the factory yesterday for a tasting. Have done this before and always end up buying something. There were about 5 or 6 different cakes to try. The Concord [for Passover] was huge and very chocolate much too sweet for me [really!]. There was a new peach cake that would not travel very well as it was quite delicate. Anyway, I bought a Cassata* style cheesecake [which I haven't tried yet], an Apple Streusel cheesecake which we ate last night and it was delicious, and a New York style cheesecake 'second' which is always good. You can pile some good junk on top and no one will know it was a second.

bloginfo: The factory is located at 1280 Blue Hills Ave., Bloomfield, CT 06002
Open: Mon.- Thurs. 8:30 am-4:00 pm
Fridays 8:30 am-7:00 pm and Saturdays 10:00 am-2:00 pm

blognote: The cassata* is similar to small cake, and consists of round sponge cake moistened with fruit juices or liqueur. It is then layered with ricotta cheese, candied peel, and a chocolate or vanilla filling similar to cannoli cream. It is covered with a shell of marzipan, pink and green pastel colored icing, and decorative designs. The cassata is finally topped with candied fruit depicting cherries and slices of citrus fruit native to Sicily. [from Wikipedia]
